Lunch Time: Show me the Money - Business Challenge in Open Source & Disaggregation: Sandra Rivera, Intel, John Vrionis, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Dave Ward, Cisco, Chris Rice, AT&T & Rob Howard, Comcast
Service providers want to turn their networks into a platform for revenue generating innovative service delivery with significantly lower capex and opex and without vendor lock-in. Yes they want production quality open source platforms and production ready customized open source solutions based on white boxes. That is great. However in this new model, who makes what investments and who can have a sustainable business model. Without this clarity we have a significant risk that the current business models will continue and realizing the full potential of disaggregation and open source will be difficult or impossible.  The purpose of this panel is to try to get this clarity so the community can make investments with some idea how they can get the return on their investments and what type of business models are likely to work.

Open Programmable Edge + 5G, Discussion Led By: Prodip Sen, HPE, Srinivasa Kalapala, Verizon, Larry Peterson, ON.Lab, & Sachin Katti, Stanford University, xRAN.org
The network edge (i.e. Central Offices, Points of Presence, Internet Exchange Points) is becoming strategically important for service providers (including cloud providers) because it is a vantage point for them to offer low latency, efficient (bandwidth conservation) and customized services to residential, mobile and enterprise customers. And with 5G, IoT and AR/VR becoming reality soon, an open programmable network edge is becoming really important and urgent. In this session we will discuss what we can do to create open programmable network edge with open source SDN, NFV and Cloud Platforms and disaggregated white boxes.

  • 5G, IoT, and AR/VR services and their implications on network architecture — Srini Kalapala, Verizon
  • NFV as an enabler of programmable network edge — Prodip Sen, HPE
  • Enabling Innovative Services at the Network Edge — Larry Peterson, ONF/ON.Lab
  • SD-RAN and xRAN and how they pave the path for 5G, Sachin Katti
